AED builds on the skills learned in CPR and first aid courses, and provides knowledge of how the heart works and what goes wrong when defibrillation is required. Participants learn when and how to operate an automated external defibrillator including AED maintenance, data management, and reporting protocols required following an incident.

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Society CPR-A or higher certification.

Instruction & certification: Current Lifesaving Instructors or First Aid Instructors teach and certify candidates. The Lifesaving Society deems its certifications to be "current" for 24 months from the certification date.

AED - Pad placement


  1. Demonstrate knowledge of when to use and how to operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), including maintenance of AED unit, data managmeent and reporting protocols.
  2. Demonstrate one- and two-rescuer adult and child automated external defibrillation on a manikin.
