National Lifeguards are highly skilled and trained individuals. To become a lifeguard you must be 16 years of age and have Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid certifications. See the chart for the progression.

The Lifesaving Society introduced Lifesaving Medal competition in 1935. Medals were awarded to each of the winning pair in a lifesaving race conducted as part of the program in any public swimming exhibition or competition conducted by an Affiliate of the Society.
